In steps of archeological excavations
Perhaps not many tourists visit Georgia nowadays. Although it’s a fact, that there are many ways of attracting tourists to the country. Their attention can be directed to Georgia from various angles, for example – archeology.

Perhaps not many tourists visit Georgia nowadays. Although it’s a fact, that there are many ways of attracting tourists to the country. Their attention can be directed to Georgia from various angles, for example – archeology.

This field definitely is rich in diversity: in western Georgia there are caverns unique in their layer composition; we have undated cyclopical buildings, fortresses, which are especially abundant on the southern territory, ruins of ancient cities which are only possible to behold through aero-archeology. People who are interested in the resettlement of Hebrews, the spread of Christianity in Georgia and other topics can also find something of interest. This is biblical archeology. It must be hard not to become interested, when you find out that the roads leading to the Trialeti kurgans are identical to the roads leading to the Egyptian pyramids.

All this requires the advice and assistance of professionals. Necessary people can be found at the Archeological Research Center. It was created in 1977 and is actively operating up to nowadays. Work there is mainly of two types: thematic and concerned with new constructions.

Thematic expeditions involve learning and research of monuments of specific periods. Nowadays they are few in number. Not because places of interest for researchers are not to be found in Georgia – on the contrary, our country is very rich from this point of view. It’s just that budgetary problems are very real in this field as well. In spite of this, every year minimum 2-3 expeditions take place. This year is no exception – they already know, that serious work awaits them in summer and autumn.

Maybe thematic expeditions are more interesting and rewarding, but professionals undertake every task with equal interest. Most probably when you are doing something you love, you do not think about picking something out and neglecting the rest. Although it is a solid fact that that something you love may be difficult and dangerous. Professionals sometimes are compelled to work under harsh winter conditions, in areas covered in snow. When your hands are frozen and the land does not give in, doing your job must be very difficult, but that happens as well, mostly during non-thematic works, where new monuments and or various objects appear during construction works, therefore require instant unearthing. Such are, for example, BP’s projects. They have been cooperating with BP since 1997 and since then have found numerous monuments of archeological value. They have contacts with the Baku-Supsa constructions, where interesting discoveries were made.

The expedition groups, except for the leader, must inevitably include an archeologist-painter, who is needed for the depiction of unmovable monuments. Other members are selected according to the nature and difficulty of the expedition.

In order to participate, primarily one must have appropriate interest, health and financial state. Those who plan on staying in suites and dressing in tuxedos during the expedition will surely be disappointed. One should also take into consideration, that often natural conditions are very harsh.

At this moment, among the already decided projects is Gudabertka, which is an important monument. Works continued for almost a month last year and as a result, interesting material has been uncovered. This year the expedition is planned sometime in August-September. More specific information concerning this monument will be provided by that time. It is already known that the expedition will not be massive, but a few tourists will have an opportunity of being there. Naturally, after taking a few details and negotiations in mind.

Tourists can also finance saving expeditions. Monuments of this category are numerous and require attention. However this is not an easy task and requires organization on a specific level.

Naturally, everyone takes tourism and rest differently. Choicer are individual too. It’s a fact that for people with interest and initiative, everything various solutions can be found. Probably those who seek, find specifically whatever they seek.
